UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION BENEFITS

Minnesota’s unemployment insurance program provides unemployment compensation benefits to employees who involuntarily lost their jobs.  If you lost your job or are no longer working, you may be eligible to receive unemployment compensation benefits.  The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (MDEED) determines whether an individual is eligible to receive unemployment compensation benefits.

How do I apply for unemployment compensation benefits?

You may apply for unemployment compensation benefits either online at www.uimn.org or by calling the MDEED at 651-296-3711.

What happens is my application for unemployment benefits is denied?

If your application is denied, you have the right to appeal that decision and request a hearing with an unemployment law judge.  The decision you receive from the MDEED will provide information about how to file an appeal and the time frame in which you must file an appeal.  You must appeal the decision within the time frame listed on the decision or you will likely lose your right to do so.

What happens if my former employer contests my application for benefits?

If you are awarded benefits, your former employer may contest your award for benefits.  If this happens, the MDEED will schedule a hearing with an unemployment law judge.
